August News Letter

Thank you to all of the Thunder for helping to refurbish the club kitchen. I didn’t realize the amount of effort it was going to take. It took a lot of heavy lifting and sweat to get all of the equipment out of the kitchen and back in after the restoration. The walls, floor and baseboard really look good, considering a lot of the work was accomplished by a bunch of “racecar drivers". Way to go.

This race was a fight all the way to the finish line. The #3 and #13 were running neck and neck and moving up fast was the #24 car. The last lap was fatal for #24. Driven by "Hot Rod" Ronnie Hunter. He was trying to sling shot #13 driven by “Fireball” Ken Lowery and the Fireball cut him off causing Ronnie to strip his left axle. “Mater” the tow truck driven by “Tom-Mater” Sorensen came to the rescue. This was the first parade for Tom, and the first time he ever towed anyone. The rookie was so proud you couldn’t wipe that grin from his face with a fire hose. The crowd applauded as the #24 car went by on the hook of Mater. This was a good day for our newest member.

After the confrontation between the #13 and the #24 car it looked like "Crazy" Larry would win the race in the #3 car. All of a sudden the #88 Navy car driven by "Junior" Jim Donovan came up from behind and blew the doors off the #3 car. Where did he come from? This was his first parade and he should have been at the rear of the pack with all the “rookies”. Doesn’t he know that it’s not nice to beat the Boss. Larry made mention that “His day is coming”. Could it be that the old dog has been put up on the porch and he doesn’t like the view from there? I guess we will all have to wait until the next race to find out.

Looking back at the finish line we could see Tom towing the #24 and waving a trophy for the “Best Go Cart entry”. He thought trophy was for him and “Mater”, (another rookie) so we collectively beat him until he released it to the unit.

With the parade over we all headed to the Keystone Shrine Club for lunch and a cold beer. The beer coolers were off line so we found ourselves having soda pop instead of “barley pop” with lunch. It was enough to bring tears to the eyes of the best of drivers and it may have been the straw that broke the camels back for Larry, having been defeated in the race by a rookie and no beer for lunch took its toll that day.

We were told that beer could be found at the Klay Kats party so a few of us made our way to Dennis Green’s home to enjoy the fellowship of the Klay Kats and our Hillbilly brothers and sisters. Those Kats really know how to put on a fish feed. A few of us will need to loose a couple of pounds before we get back into our ride. Did I mention that they had cold beer? Just what Larry needed to snap him out of his depression brought on by his defeat at the Keystone 500.

To Dennis and the Kats, again thank you for your hospitality. It is always nice to have the Club Units together after a parade.
